Anyinginyi Arts is based in Tennant Creek which is the main
centre for the Yapakalangu or Barkly Tableland region.
The Yapakalangu is home to people of nine language groups. Tennant
Creek is situated within the Warumungu region. To the north is the
Warlmanpa, and the Jingli/Mudburra regions and east is the Wambaya.
The Walpiri live west of Tennant Creek and South are the Kaytetj,
Alyawarr and Anmatjere regions.
Anyinginyi Arts is a unit of Anyinginyi Congress Aboriginal
Corporation. Anyinginyi Congress is an Aboriginal Medical Service
that provides primary health care to people of the Barkly region.
The aim of Anyinginyi Congress is to provide a holistic approach
to Aboriginal health. So not only do we provide medical services
but also through Anyinginyi Arts we attempt to address cultural
and spiritual health issues of Aboriginal people of the Barkly region.
There are few areas of Australia that still produce abundant artefacts
of the fine quality and absolute authenticity of the Yapakalangu
region. Anyinginyi Arts facilitates this production in two ways:
purchasing paintings and
artefacts directly from
artists and buying artefacts
produced in the workshops.
There is also the opportunity for tourists to watch Aboriginal
artists and crafts persons making works of art at the Anyinginyi
Arts workshop, which is adjacent to the gallery in Irvine Street.
This site was made possible thanks to funding from the the Department
of Communications Information Technology and the Arts and Networking
the Nation, the Commonwealth Government's Regional Telecommunications
Infrastructure Fund.
